Etiology
parasite - lives on surface of RBCs
What is the former name of this disease?
Hemobartonella felis
Pathogenesis
Blood borne (fleas, bites)
Episodic - "recurrent parasitemic episodes" successivly are less severe
Where does this disease colonize?
On RBC's - autoimmune response kills RBC's
Spleen removes parasitized RBCs and profound anemia occures. Regernerative because bone marrow uses reticulocytes.
Clinical Signs during and episode
Pale mucous menbranes
Extreme weakness
Tachycardia, tachypnea
Pyrexia, icterus
Lab
low PCV
reticulocytes
MAy see parasites in RBCs
Send to lab for PCR
many are FLV or FIV positive
Necropsy
splenomegaly
Tx
tetracyclines to control (not eliminate)
Steriods (prednesion) to supress immune response
Px
30% untreated die
recovered cats are chronic carriers; infective when they relapse
Prevent
flea control
fighting/biting control
