New Moon
|
The entire half of the moon facing earth is dark. It can appear as if there is no moon in the sky.

As light from the sun shines on the moon, only a small sliver can be seen. The light appears on the right and the moon appears to be getting larger.

First Quarter Moon

Half of the part of the moon facing Earth is lit by the sun. This phase can also be called a half moon. The moon still appears to be getting larger.

More than half of the moon facing the earth is lit by sun. The moon still appears to be getting larger. This phase can often look like a full moon, so look closely!
