 a note head
the elliptical part of a note. Note heads may be coloured completely black or white, indicating the note value (i.e., rhythmic duration). In a whole note, the note head is the only component of the note. Shorter note values attach a stem to the note head, and possibly beams or flags.
note stem
a thin line that extends either up or down from the note head. The line extends from the right if pointing upward or from the left if pointing downward.
note flag
curvy mark to the right of the note stem. Its purpose is to tell you how long to hold a note
note’s value
how long that note should be held.
quarter note
a closed note head with a stem. gets one beat
half note
 An open note head with a stem is a half note
whole note
An open note that looks like an “o” without a stem is a whole note, and it gets held for four beats.
