Let's learn together about Vasodilators!
So, grab some motivation and let's get to work!
First of all, tell me, what would a vasodilator drug do?
A medication that dilates or widens the opening in a blood vessel.

ukhealthcare.uky.edu/patient/glossary/glossary-v.htm
Could you give me reasons for why a vasodilator is significant? Or what a vasodilator promotes?
Vasodilator:
Lower blood pressure (High BP can cause permanent damage and increase risk of heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, or kidney failure)
Easier passageway for flowing blood
Reduce workload

*Some work on arteries and some on veins. Some work on both*
Principal indications for vasodilators. You can come up with a few:
Vasodilators indicatons:
Essential hypertension (Primary)
Hypertensive crisis - rapid
Angina pectoris
Heart failure
Myocardial infarction
Principal adverse effects for vasodilators. Name 3:
Adverse effects for vasodilators:
Postural hypotension
Reflex tachycardia
Expansion of blood volume due to Renin-angiotensin system & Renal filtration
You will be learning about 3 meds for vasodilators:
Vasodilator:
Hydralazine [Apresoline] (Dilating arterioles)

Minoxidil [Loniten] (Direct dilation of arterioles, increases contractility. Cause hypertrichosis hair growth)

Sodium Nitroprusside [Nipride] (Fastest acting antihypertensive agent)
HYDRALAZINE [Apresoline]
Used to cause direct dilation of __________.
Adverse effects are: reflex tachycardia, increase in blood volume, and ______ _____ _____________ ____ syndrome. Postural hypotension is _______.

DDIs: With ____ blockers and other anti HTN drugs.
HYDRALAZINE [Apresoline]
Used to cause direct dilation of arterioles.
Adverse effects are: reflex tachycardia, increase in blood volume, and systemic lupus erythematosus like syndrome. Postural hypotension is minimal.

DDIs: With Beta blockers and other anti HTN drugs.
MINOXIDIL [Loniten]
(Direct dilation of arterioles, increases contractility. Causes hypertrichosis hair growth.)
Minoxidil is quite rapid and is only used for severe hypertension if other drugs are not responsive.

Biggest Adverse effect is....do you remember? It was on the slide prior to this one. (*HInt: a topical version is Rogaine)
SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE [Nipride] (Fastest acting antihypertensive agent.
Works on venous and arterioles.)
Na Nitroprusside:
Used for HTN emergencies (IV)
Releases nitric oxide which activates cellular cascade which causes similar effects like nitroglycerin
What are side effects for Na Nitroprusside?
Adverse effects for Na Nitroprusside:
*Thiocyanate toxicity after prolonged administration
*Cyanide poisoning and excessive hypotension if too rapidly administered
Other Vasodilators (You've learned about these ones already. See if you can recall these other drugs and what they do.)
Other Vasodilators:
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
Angiotensin II receptor antagonist
Organic nitrates
Calcium channel blockers
Sympatholytics
That's all!
