Pangaea
a hypothetical supercontinent that includes all of the land masses on Earth. It began breaking apart about 200 million years ago.
Tectonic Plates
one of the large, moving pieces into which Earth's lithosphere is broken and which commonly carries both oceanic and continental crust.
Crust
A thin outer layer of rock above a planet's mantle, including all dry land and ocean basins. Earhjt's continental crust is 40 kilometers thick on average and oceanic crust is 7 kilometers thick on average.
oceanic-oceanic subduction
a boundary along which a plate carrying oceanic crust sinks beneath another plate with oceanic crust
convergent boundary
Aboundary along which two tectonic plates pushed together, characterized either by subduction or a continental collision
Asthenosphere
A layer of hotter softer rock in the upper mantle.
Lithosphere
The Greek prefix of litho is stone or rock. This layer is the most rigid
outer core
A layer of liquid metals that surrounds the inner core.
Inner core
the inner core is a ball of hot solid metals. There is an enormous pressure at the center of the Earth. This squeezes the atoms of the metals so closely that the core remains solid despite the heat.
divergent boundary
A boundary along which two tectonic plates move apart, charaterized by a mid-ocean ridge or contrenral valley.
Convection
the transfer of energy from place to placre by motion of a heated liquid in Earth's mantle.
oceanic-continental suduction
a boundary along which a plate carrying oceanic crust sinks benath a plate with continental crust
continental drift
the hypothesis that Earth's continentsmove on Earth's surface
continental-continental collision
a boundary along which two plates carring continental crust push together
