Worcester v. Georgia (1832)

Native Am. sued Georgia because they tried to regulate the Native Am. nation; Native Am. claimed they were independent of Georgia and so Georgia laws didn't apply. John Marshall (Chief Justice of Supreme Court) ruled Native Am. nation could be considered independent; Jackson's response was "let John Marshall try and enforce his decision"; remember President executes the laws.

Nullification Crisis/Tariff of Abominations

John Calhoun (from S. Carolina) claimed the Tariff of 1828 was too high on manufactured goods; southerners were forced to buy northern goods which were more expensive than British goods. S. Carolina declared law null and void; a state can't ignore a federal law. Tested young govn't.

Jackson didn't want 2nd Bank of U.S. In order to hurt this option, he put federal deposits in these types of banks (pet banks); eventually this hurt the economy and led to Panic of 1837
