1854 composed of anti-slavery/northern Whigs, Northern Democrats, Free soilers, and abolitionists. Formed by the opponents of the Kansas Nebraska Act. Republicans did not want to abolish slavery, they only wanted to keep slavery out of the west. |

1856 Kansas became Popular Sovereignty which led both anti and pro slavery people to rush into Kansas to vote. This became very violent between the two groups. More than 200 people died in the name of slavery. Was a mini civil war. |

Lincoln Douglas Debate |
1858 Held in Illinois. Series of senatorial debates between Republican Abraham Lincoln and Democratic Stephen A. Douglas (lil giant). The debates mainly focused on the issue of slavery in the west. Douglas: popular sovereignty Lincoln: Don't let it spread west Douglas won re-election but Lincoln became known as a nationally known figure. |

Declaration of the Immediate Causes of Secession (South Carolina) |
1860 South Carolina was the first to succeed. They had the greatest population of slaves. They left because slave states feared that Lincoln and the Republican Party would end slavery destroying the southern economy and way of life. They left directly after Lincoln was elected. They justified their leaving by saying that since each state voluntarily joined the union, states had the right to leave the union. First 7 to succeed were in the Deep South. |

Crittenden Compromise |
1860 Proposed by senator John C. Crittenden (Whig from Kentucky) Wanted to stop the states from succeeding. The Missouri Compromise line was extended across the Pacific Ocean. North of the line: free South of the line: slave This would be FOREVER and nobody could change it EVER!!!
It failed in congress. Lincoln no likely because it moved slavery west. |

Emancipation Proclamation |
1862....took effect 1863 Issued by Abraham Lincoln. Freed the slaves who were under Confederate control. Allowed black soldiers to join the union. Basically added the goal of ending slavery. |

New York Draft Riots |
1863 Wealthy men were able to buy their way out of the draft. This ticked off the poor Irish immigrants. Led to a 4 day riot in New York City.
A mob of mostly Irish immigrates assaulted especially blacks in the city. Turned into a race riot |
Over 100 blacks were killed |

March to the Sea |
1864 Led by William Tecumseh Sherman Led a large army across Georgia destroying everything they could get their hands on that were Confederate resources.

-the south lost in the CW because Northern superiority in resources and main power -slaves were content with being slaves -the south fought for states rights not slavery -Robert E Lee is a god like figure |

Famous civil war nurse. Known as "the angel of the battlefield" Wanted to find/identify soldiers killed or missing in action. Ran office of missing soldiers
