EXTENSION
Movement that straightens or opens a joint. Most joints are extended in anatomical position.

Think backward motion except the knee which goes forward like kicking a ball.

Sagittal Plane.
FLEXION
Movement that bends a joint and brings the bones closer together. Most joints are flexed in fetal position.

Think forward motion except the knee. Lateral flexion is to the side.

Sagittal Plane.
ADDUCTION
Appendages only.

Brings a joint medially toward the midline.

Adduction of the Scapula is Retraction.

Horizontal Adduction is to swing the raised and extended arm across the front of the body.

Frontal Plane.
ABDUCTION
Appendages only.

Brings a joint laterally away from the midline.

Abduction of the Scapula is Protraction.

Horizontal Abduction is to swing the raised and extended arm away from the body.

Frontal Plane.
ROTATION
Axis skeleton especially head and vertebral column.

Turns, twists.

Scapula upward rotation raises the Acromion and drops the Scapula clockwise. Downward rotation drops the Acromion and raises the Scapula counter-clockwise.

Shoulder internal rotation is putting hand on heart. Shoulder lateral rotation is jumping rope.

Hip medial rotation is knee flexed and foot lateral. Lateral rotation is knee flexed and foot medial behind other knee.

Transverse Plane.
CIRCUMDUCTION
Shoulder and hip joints only.

Combination of flexion, extension, adduction and abduction. Swimming the backstroke.
LATERAL FLEXION
Axial skeleton.

Head or vertebral column bend laterally tot he side.

Frontal Plane.
SUPINATION
Pivoting action of the forearm. Hands up.

Also occurs at the feet.

Transverse Plane.
PRONATION
Pivoting action of the forearm. Hands down.

Also occurs at the feet.

Transverse Plane.
INVERSION
Feet only.

Elevates the foot's medial side and brings the sole of the foot medially. "Turn in". Raises inside of foot.

Frontal Plane.
EVERSION
Feet only.

Elevates the foot's lateral side and moves the sole laterally. "Turn out". Raises ouside of foot.

Frontal Plane.
PLANTAR FLEXION
Ankle only.

Point the foot down. Step on car gas pedal.

Sagittal Plane.
DORSIFLEXION
Ankle only.

Point the foot up. Step off the gas pedal.

Sagittal Plane.
PROTRACTION
Scapula, clavicle, head and jaw.

To protrude. Structure moves anteriorly.

Think front to back.

Frontal Plane.
RETRACTION
Scapula, clavicle, head and jaw.

To retreat. Structure moves posteriorly.

Frontal Plane.
