Arrhythmia
Irregular rhythm of the heart.
Artery
A vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the tissues of the body.
Capillary
Extremely small vessel that connects the ends of the smallest arteries (arterioles) to the smallest veins (venules), where exchanges of nutrients and wastes, O2 and CO2 occur; blood vessels at cellular level.
Coagulate
To solidify or change from a fluid state to a solid state.
Diuretic
An agent that increases urine excretion.
Edema
A condition in which the body tissues contain an excessive amount of tissue fluid.
Enzymes
Proteins that act as a catalyst causing metabolic reactions to take place at a faster rate within the body.
Thrombin
An enzyme that is formed in coagulating blood from prothrombin; this reacts with fibrinogen converting it into fibrin, which is essential in the formation of blood clots; tested by performing a prothrombin time (PT) or partial thromboplastin time (PTT) blood test.
Thrombolytic
Medication used to break up a thrombus or blood clot.
Vein
A vessel that carries deoxygeneated blood to or toward the heart.
