What is an ionic bond? Name two substances that would bond ionically and what they would form.
When one atom gives away an electron to another atom.
Example: Sodium and Chlorine to form Sodium Chloride or Table Salt
What is a covalent bond? Name two substances that would bond covalently and what they would form.
A covalent bond is when two atoms share electrons.
Example: Lithium (1 electron) + Florine (7 electrons) = Lithium Fluoride
What is a chemical bond?
A chemical bond is a non contact force holding atoms together in a combined state
What is an isotope? Why are they important?
An element that has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons in the nucleus. Important because the number of protons determines the Atomic Number
Smallest Unit(s) of a protein
amino acid
Smallest unit(s) of a lipid
fatty acid / glycerol
Smallest unit(s) of a carbohydrate
monosaccharide
Three types of Carbohydrates and give examples.
Monosaccharide (glucose), disaccharide (sucrose), polysaccharide (starch)
Two different kinds of Fats and name examples. Also tell what lipids do in the body.
Saturated (animal fat) and Unsaturated Fats (olive oil).
Lipids are used for long term energy.
Functions of proteins in the body (5), healthy foods to find them.
Hormones, Muscles are made of them, Carrier molecules, Structural, and enzymes are made of them. Healthy foods are Fish, Beans, White meat.
name five enzymes used in the digestive system.
Protease, pepsin, amylase, lypase, nuclease.
Tell where protease and pepsin are found and what they do.
Protease&pepsin are made by + break down proteins.
Tell where amylase is found and what it does.
amylase is found in + breaks down carbohydrates
Tell where lypase is found and what it does.
lypase is found in + breaks down lipids.
Tell where nuclease is found and what it does.
nuclease is found + breaks down nucleic acids.
