What are the 2 types of PP hemorrhage?
Early & Late
What is early PP hemorrhage primarily caused by? What are some other potential causes?
Primary: Uterine atony

Other: Lacerations of genital tract, retained placental fragments, coagulation problems
What is the primary cause of late PP hemorrhage? When does this occur?
Retained placental fragments.

Occurs after the first 24 hours post delivery.
What are nursing actions you should take PP in regards to hemorrhage?
1. Regular fundus tone assessment
2. Regular assessment for lochia
3. VS q15 min or more for 1st hour
4. Orthostatic BP's
5. Monitor I&O
6. IV therapy & fluid replacement
7. Monitor H&H
8. Methergine (if Pitocin not working)

Describe PP localized infection and the indicators for this condition.
Localized infection involve infections of the episotomy, or lacerations to the perineum, vagina (also includes wound infection of the abdominal site for c-section)

Indications:
- Red, tender skin edges
- Edema
- Purulent drainage
- Localized pain
- Temp spikes
What is endometritis and what ar ethe indicators of it?
Endometritis = inflammation of the endometrium

Indicators:
- Scant or profuse bloody & foul smelling discharge
- Uterine tenderness
- Irregular temp elevations
- Tachy / chills
- Sub-involution (uterus remains enlarged)
What is thrombophlebitis and the indicators of this condition?
Inflammation of the lining of a blood vessel w/ formation of blood clots.

Indicators:
- Positive homans sign
- Redness, edema of lower extremity
- Pain
What is mastitis, predisposing factor, and indicators of this condition?
Infection of the breast

Predisposing factor = cracked nipples

Indicators:
- Localized pain
- Swelling
- Redness
- Fever
- Generalized flu like feeling
