What is the pipeline identification for fuel?

Red label with a 4 pointed star

What are the 3 types of fuel tank?

Integral, rigid, flexible

How are each fuel tank identified?

Rigid are self supporting containers made in shapes and sizes to fit the space available. Flexible fuel tanks are constructed of flexible rubber other fabric impregnated neoprene walls. Integral tanks are commonly located in the wings.

What is the purpose of a fuel system?

Store and deliver more than the maximum amount of fuel at a controlled rate

How may fuel be delivered differently from a high wing or low wing aircraft?

Low wing aircraft require a pump, whereas high wing can use gravity

How are rigid or integral tanks sealed?

Interfay is applied, joint is made, fillet is applied, brush coat is applied, barrier coat Is applied

An integral wing used as a fuel tank is known as a what wing?

Wet wing

What Is the purpose of a drain valve and where would it be fitted?

Bottom of sump you drain water

What is the purpose of a water scavenge system?

To collect water from tank low points and discharge it towards the fuel pump inlet or baffle check valve.

How are booster pumps driven, what cools them and what happens if they overheat?

Electrically, immersed within a canister in the fuel, thermal fuse will rupture at 175°c shutting down pump

What rules govern fuel pipes through passenger or cargo compartments?

Must be enclosed in a double wall shrouded pipe

Where are LP fuel valve fitted, name two instances when they are operated?

Front spar. fire, engine shutdown or maintenance

What is the purpose of a cross feed valve?

Enables fuel to be fed to any engine from any tank

What is the purpose of a vent system?

To allow free passage of air between tanks and atmosphere

Where is the vent system connected to?

Surge/vent tank

What is especially done to centre wing tanks?

Ventilate vapour seal

When indicating full, how much is left in the tank and why?

2% left to allow for expansion

Why don't fuel probes touch the bottom of tanks?

Because it may contain settled water and sediment

How can the fuel quantity be checked if there is no electrical power?

Magnetic droopstick

What is the approximate maximum refuelling pressure?

40psi

When the tanks contents gauge reads empty is there any fuel left? If yes how much?

Puddling

Why do we have longitudinal fuel balance?

As fuel is used, balance of the aircraft changes
