What is a Solution?

A solution is a homogenous mixture containing one or more solvents dissolved in a solvent.

What are the two broad categories of mixtures?

-Homogeneous mixtures

-Heterogeneous mixtures

Homogeneous meaning ?

To have the same composition throughout.

Heterogeneous meaning ?

To have a composition that is not uniform.

What is an Alloy?

An alloy is a solution of a metal and another solid element ( usually another metal)

What are two heterogeneous mixtures that appears uniform?

Blood and Milk

What is radioactivity?

Radioactivity is the spontaneous unstable emisson of radiation.

What would iodine dissolve in ? Ethanol or water

Ethanol

What determines the solubility of solute in a particular solvent?

* the nature of the solute and the solvent

*the temperature

*the pressure

What is a concentrated solution?

Contains relatively large quantities of solute dissolved in a solvent.

What is a saturated solution?

Contains as much solute as the solvent can possibly dissolve at a particular temperature and pressure in the presence of undissolved solute. A solution that is saturated at one temperature may not be saturated another temperature.
