meiosis

occurs in the sex cells which give rise to sperm or oocytes. daughter cells are not identical to parent. chromsomes come together and mix the genetic info. 4 cells are produced with half the number of chromosomes compared to mitosis

somatic cells

cells in the body, except for sex cells

mitosis

cell division process that takes place in the somatic cells. daughter cells are identical to the parent

interphase

synthesis of cellular components needed for cell division, including synthesis of DNA

prophase

first stage of mitosis. chromosomes appear due to coiling of chromatin, the nucleolus breaks down and disappears, spindle fibers begin to form, centrioles move toward opposing poles, and the nuclear envelope breaks down

metaphase

chromosomes align at the metaphase plate

anaphase

sister chromatids separate and move towards opposite ends of the cell

telophase

a new nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes and the chromosomes begin to uncoil
