Mitosis and Meiosis (Similarities)
~ Both go through 4 phases, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Teleophase
~ DNA Replication must take place before either process begins
Number of daughter cells produced in Mitosis
2
Number of daughter cells produced in Meiosis
4
Number of chromosomes produced in Mitosis
(2n) Diploid
Number of chromosomes produced in Meiosis
(n) Haploid
Where does Mitosis occur?
In the Somatic Cells
Where does Meiosis occur?
In the Gonads
(Testes ~ Males)
(Ovaries ~ Females)
Number of cell divisions in Mitosis
1
Number of cell divisions in Meiosis
2
Purpose of Mitosis
For Repair, Replacement and Growth
Purpose of Meiosis
To produce Gametes
DEFINITION: Gonads
The sexual reproduction organs that produce gametes.
DEFINITION: Karyotype
The process of ordering of all of the chromosomes in an organism.
ORDER OF CELL DIVISION
1. Mitosis
2. Cytokinesis
3. Interphase

Why aren't chromosomes visible during Interphase?
Because during Prophase the chromatin condense and thicken becoming chromatides. Once the chromosomes are chromatid they are visible.
DEFINITION: Homologous Pairs
Same Length
Same Banding Pattern
Position of the centromere is the same.
