Expressed powers
Those powers directly granted to the Federal Government by the Constitution
direct tax
A tax that must be payed by the person upon whom it is levied
indirect tax
A tax levied on a person or business, but is passed on to another party for payment
revenue bills
Bills involved in raising money for the government. The COnstitution designates that such bills must be introduced in the House of Representatives
appropriation
authorization of money for a specific purpose. Cogress authorizes funds for other branches of government to function
government bond
Certificates bought by individuals or businesses as a means of loaning money to the government. In exchange the government promises to pay back the full amount plus interest at a later time.
national debt
The total amount of money the national government owes as a result of borrowing an interest on borrowing. It happens when the government spends more money than it takes in.
federal budget
The federal government itemized plan for the expenditure of funds over a certain period of time
currency power
The power given to Congress by the Constitution to coin money and regulate its value
bankruptcy
The state of being legally unable to pay debts
interstate commerce
Trade between two or more states
copyright
The exclusive right of a person to publish, reproduce, or sell his or her own literary, musical, or artistic creations.
patent
A lisence granted to an inventor that gives exclusive rights to produce and sell a product for a specified period of time.
implied powers
The powers given to the federal government that are implied by the expressed powers given by the Constitution particularly in Article I, Section 8.
Necessary and proper clause
Article I, Section 8 of the Constiturion that gives the Congress to make all laws "necessary and proper" for the federal government to carry out its responsibilties.
elastic clause
Article I, Section 8 of the Constiturion that gives the Congress to make all laws "necessary and proper" for the federal government to carry out its responsibilties.
strict constructionist
Those who believe the Constitution should be strictly followed and feel the government should only exercise powers specifically named in the Constitution.
loose constructionist
Those who feel the constitution should be interpreted loosely and give broad definitions to the powers of the federal government
impoundment
The process by which the president can refuse to spend money that COngress has appropriated for a certain purpose.
impeach
To bring a formal charge against a public official for wrong doing or misconduct while in office.
Senatorial courtesy
An unwritten rule that an executive appointment to a certain state must first be approved by the senators of that state

A legal writ that requires a person to appear in court to offer testimony

Protection from being brought to trial for certain actions
