BASED ON THE MBR'S RECORD & THE GUIDE LINES IN ART. 1.B.4.a OF THIS MANUAL THE CO SHALL ADVISE EACH MBR APPROX 6 MONTHS BEFORE HIS/HER ENLISTMENT EXPRISE WHETHER HE OR SHE IS ELIGIBLE TO REENLIST
MBR who meet the reenlistment criteria
(of ART. 1.A.5)

Shall be assigned the reenlistment code RE-1, "Eligible for reenlistment" & allowed to reenlist for a maximum of 6 yrs"
Administrative Discharge board
A fact-finding board consisting of at least three experienced commissioned officers, at least one of whom serves as a lieutenant commander or highter,
Characterization of Service for Administrative Separation
A determination reflecting a member's behavior and performance of duty during a specific period of service. the three characterizations are honorable, under honorable conditions.
Entry Level Status
The first 180 days of continuous active duty
Types of Discharge
There are 5 types of discharge for characterized separations:

1) Honorable Discharge, DD form 256 CG, Separation with honor
2) General Discharge
3) Discharge underother than honorable conditions
4) Bad conduct
5) Dishonorable discharge
Reason For Discharge
There are 13 formal reasons for discharge
1) Enlistment expires
2) Service Obligation fulfilled
3) Convenience of the Government
4) Dependency or hardship
5) Minority (age)
6) Disability
7) Unsuitability
8) Security
9) Misconduct
10) Court-martial sentence
11) Entry-level separation (uncharacterized discharge)
12) For the good of the service
13) Care of Newborn Children as defined in Article 1.E. of this Manual
Characterization of Service
The sole criterion on which the Coast Guard characterizes service in the current enlistment or period of service is the member's military record during that enlistment
Honorable Discharge:
A mbr's commanding officer or higher authority can effect a separation with an honorable discharge if the mbr is eligible for or subject to discharge and the mbr merits an honorable discharge under the standards prescribed here.
1) Enlistment expires
2) Service obligation fulfilled
3) Convenience of the Government
4) Dependency or hardship
5) Minority (age)
6) Unsuitability
7) Misconduct (except involvement with illegal drugs or obstruction drug urinalysis testing by tampering)
8) The Commendant so directs
General Discharge
The mbr's CO or higher authority may effect a separation with a general discharge if the mbr is subject to discharge and a general discharge is warranted under the standards prescribed in this paragraph. When a general discharge is issued for one of the reasons listed in ART. 1.B.2.f. (1)(a) of this Manual, the specific reason shall be stated in an entry on an Administrative Remarks, Form CG-3307, entry in the member's PDR. A general discharge applies in these situations:
