Section #12 Involuntary
for a period of up to 3 days. And the client must be given the opportunity to apply or to agree and sign for a voluntary admission.
Section 10 and 11
conditional voluntary basis. the client is required to provide 3 day advance notice if they are intending to leave the facility so there is an adequate amount of time for the physician to take further action regarding hospitalization if it is deemed necessary.
-3 days need to be 3 business days and it does have to be provided in writing
Section 7 and 8
retaining a client in a facility who is a danger to themselves or others.
-the first commitment is 7 and 8 is for 6 months. And someone who was in our area who was sectioned under a 7 and 8 would most likely go to Taunton state hospital.
-If section 7 and 8 is required, again, after that 6 months period, the second and subsequent commitments can be legally applied for up to one year.
The document that classifies mental disorders is called
the Diagnostic and Statistical Classification of Mental Disorders, also known as the DSM and currently it is the DSM 5, the 5th edition was released in May of 2013.

-The classification is broken down into 5 Axis.
Axis 1
covers all clinical mental disorders, and those are identified with any major mental illness.
Axis 2
covers any personality disorders or pervasive developmental disorders, and that is some kind of a developmental disability.
Axis 3
are medical conditions. Because, you will find out in the near future, there is a connectedness between mental disorders and medical conditions in many situations. As an example, the person with cancer who becomes depressed.
Axis 4
includes psychosocial and environmental issues. This would include if the patient’s employment situation. Their relationship situation, if they are divorced, single, and have children. Anything in the environment that may impact their mental health.
-Perhaps they live with an alcoholic. Do they have legal problems? There are a number of things that would go on this axis.
Axis 5
is the global assessment of functioning. This is a scale that is used to determine or identify a patient's current level of functioning. It is based on a scale of 0-100.
-most patients we see in psychiatric hospitals are functioning around 30-40 on this scale.

-they are most often learned behavior that occurred during childhood.
-They are a means of managing conflict and your outward emotional activity as well as reducing anxiety.
-They can be adaptive or maladaptive, healthy or unhealthy.
-they are reversible, but it takes a lot of work on your part, and usually with a psychotherapist to make these changes.
