Crusades
Period of time when Christian soldiers tried to conquer Jerusalem from the Muslims. It led to a weakening of feudalism and increased trade for Europe.
Central Government
A government that controls all areas of society from one location or through one system. The Roman Empire was centralized (strong central government), but feudalism in the Middle Ages was not centralized (weak central government).
Rigid Class Structure
A social class system where there is no mobility. A person remains in the same class their entire life.
Low Social Mobility
A social class system where there is no ability to change classes. A person remains in the same class their entire life.
Feudalism
A social, political, and economic system that dominated all aspects of medieval European life. Also called Manorialism. (Kings – Lords – Knights – Peasants).
Stability
A period of time without wars, rebellions, or struggles for power. The Roman Catholic Church in the Middle Ages led to stability.
Unity
When many people or groups come together into one. The Roman Catholic Church in the Middle Ages brought unity to Europe.
Renaissance
The “rebirth” of Europe beginning in the 1400s and lasting until the mid-1600s.
Inquiry
A questioning spirit. This helped accelerate the Renaissance.
Secular
Not related to religion.
Humanism
An idea during the Renaissance that stressed life on Earth, and the quality of being human and individualism. Rejected living only for the afterlife of Christianity.
