What are the 3 main functions of microtubules in Eukaryotes?

1. cellular reproduction

2. Structure

3. Intracellular/cellular movement

What are microtubules composed of?

Dimers (pair of molecules) of alpha and beta tubulin (globular proteins)

What do alpha and beta tubulin form?

long, hollow, tubes, that are constantly built and destroyed

Where do microtubules grow from?

Microtubule organizing centres (MTOC)

How to the microtubules act as tracks?

The motor protein kinesin "walks" on the microtubules, carrying transport vesicles throughout the cell

How do microtubules work in mitotic cell division?

Attach to chromosomes, forming the mitotic spindle that physically pulls chromosomes apart into their respective daughter cells

What other structures do Microtubules form?

The cilia, flagella, and centrioles
