TSA agar deeps

used for labs which check anaerobic conditions of microbes

TSA agar

used to learn to inoculate; aids in the preservation of microbes slant for lab use

enrichment broth

used to inhibit normal flora while promotion growth of a particular organism(s). Ex. SF broth which inhibits normal stool flora while promoting the growth of Salmonella and Shigella

selective media

complex plating media that may also serve to differentiate among certain genera but are highly selective in their action on other organisms (Ex. Salmonella-Shigella agar)

ubiquitous

organism being considered can be found just about everywhere

aseptically

without contamination of the culture, the sterile medium, or the surroundings

lophotrichous

a cell that has tufts of flagella at the end

Natural Killer Cells (NK)

cells that kill foreign or infected cells without antigen-antibody interaction

fomites

inanimate objects

vectors

A plasmid or virus introducing new DNA into a new host

common source epidemic

an epidemic in which the disease in transmitted from a single source (water supply) and is not transmitted from person to person

Null cell

Killer cells

plasma cells

by the cell that is activated by antibodies

B-cell

cell that converts to a plasma cell when activated and produces antibodies

T-cell

cell involved in cell mediated immunity

macrophages

largest type of leukocyte

pathogen

1.) any agent, usually a virus, bacterium, fungus, protozoan, or helminth, that causes disease. 2.) microorganisms that live on a host

colony

visible mass of cells

trypticase soy agar (TSA)

Grows gram positive, and gram negative organisms; clear yellow agar; found in agar deeps, agar slants, and agar plates

Levine/EMB

Enrichment broth (enriched medium); maroon in color; E.Coli grows as a bluish sheen; Pseudomonas have a metallic sheen

Chocolate "burnt"

"burnt" blood agar plate; Highly enriched nutrient agar (or broth) to which a nutritive supplement, such as blood, has been added (ex. blood agar). Brown in color

nutrient broth

liquid form; used to preserve microbes over long periods of time; good for transferring techniques.

MaConkey

A selective and differential medium; grows only grow negative organisms; pink in color; also has a lactose indicator (pink pigment)

Blood Agar Plate (BAP)

usually contains sheep blood in the concentration of 5%. The use of sheep blood increases hemolysis of Group A Beta Strep. Group D strep is usually alpha or on hemolytic on these plates. Will support the growth of many gram positive and gram negative organisms.

polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN)

neutrophils that have a variation in nuclear appearance

point of prevalence

the number of cases of a disease at a specific point in time in a defined population

prevalence rate

prevalence is a proportion of people in a population who have a particular disease at a specified point in time

incidence rate

the number of new cases of a disease reported in a defined population during a specific period of time

index case

first occurrence of an infection or disease that results in epidemic

propagated transmission

a disease transmitted from person to person

chromogen

a colored molecule

surface to volume ratio

surface area that supplies the nutrients to the cytoplasm

staphylococcus

the division planes of a coccus are irregular, a cluster of cells is produced

sacrina

3rd division plane perpendicular to the other 2 produces a cube shaped arrangement 8 cells

auxochrome

charged portion of a chromogen, and allows it to act

chromophore

portion of the chromogen that gives it its color

heat fixed

kills bacteria, makes them adhere to the slides and coagulates cytoplasmic proteins to make them more visible

basic stains

staining solution with a positively charged chromophore

tetrad

a 2nd division that occurs in a plane perpendicular to the 1st

streptococcus/streptobacillus

cell continues to divide in the same plane and remain attached
