Sportothrix schenckii
Rose thorns or sphagnum moss
dimorphic
yeast: oval or eliptical with single bud (cigar shaped)
Mold forms are "daisy like"
rash with lymphatic streaking can disseminate and go to lungs and brain.
Paracoccidioides brasiliensis
resides in soil causes pulmonary infection or sin
mostly south america
dimorphic
yeast forme (infective) marner's wheel (similar to histo mold form)
mold form spherical conida derived from septate hyphae.
Dimorphic fungi
slow growing
deep seated mycosis
yeast at 37 (body) mold at 30
prickly stage (in between)
blasto, cocci, histo, sporothrix, and paracocci
Dematiaceous fungi
dark (front and back)
mostly rapid growing (except those that cause mycetoma and chromomycosis)
May be subdivided by septa:
longitudinal and transverse
transvers only
single cell or other
alternaria, ulocaldum, stemphylium, epicoccum, bipolaris, drechslera, curvularia, exserohilum nigrospora, phoma, chaetomium
mycetoma
infection of the subcutaenous tissue producing mass with draining sinus.
Dx. feature is sulfur granule
98%: atypical bacteria (nocardia and streptomysis)
2% fungal
chromomycosis
infection of the skin my dematiaceous hypahal elements
dx: medlar bodies or copper pennies
Causes of chromomycosis and mycetoma
slow growing dematiaceous fungi
cladosporium, xylohypha, phialophora verrucosa and richardsiae, fonsecaea , exophiala, wangiella
Differ based on conidia
Types of sporulation seen in chromomycosis and mycetoma causing dematiaceous fungus
cladosporium type: long branching chains with dark staining joiners
phialophora type: urn shaped conidiophores with spherical conidia loose at tip
acrotheca type: short chains of eliptical conidia from eands of conidiophores (coat rack)
Rhinocladiella type: single eliptical conidia directily from sides of hyphae. pg1215
Lid lifters
Zygomyces: rhizopus, absidia, and mucor
grow fast (24 hours) and raise lids
How to tell difference between rhizopus and absidia
rhizoid beneath sporangiophores in rhizopus and from hypahe between the condiophores in absidia
Preparation of tissue with possible zygomycetes.
Do not grind
Just mince and place whole tissue on plate (hyphae will break and die)
Aspergillus fumigatus
most common
blue-green or green-brown and cottony
single row of phialides which chains of conidia
Aspergillus flavus
yellow-green or yellow brown
daisy-petal like arrangemnt of chains of conida from a single or double row of phialides circumphrentially around central vesicle.
Aspergillus niger
peppered effect with black on top and buff on reverse
black conidia cover entire surface
Look like dandylion puff
Aspergillus terreus
orange brown
looks alot like fumigatus but shorter conidia
Penicillium marneffi
systemic infection
red-wine pigment in agar
look like brushes
