Cystitis

Inflammation of urinary bladder. Treated with Sulfa. Caused by E. Coli or Staph. >100cfu/ml

Inflammation of urethra

Pyelonephritis

Inflammation of one or both kidneys. Usually E. Coli (gram-neg from intestines). 10^4cfu/ml and LE test. Treated with Keflex.

Consequences of an STI

Gonorrhea

Caused by Nesseria gonorrhoeae. Treated with Fluoroquinolones.

NGU - nongonococcal urethritis

Usually caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Treated with Doxy or Zith.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Caused by n. Gonorrhoeae or c. Trachomatis. Treat with doxy or cefoxitin.

VDRL, RPR, EIA

Latent - no symptoms


Tertiary - gummas


Treatment - benzathine penicillin


Congenital - neurological damage


Chancriod

Haemophilus ducreyi. Treated with erythromycin, ceftriaxone.

Cause: gardnerella vaginalis


Treatment: metronidazole

Herpes

Supression: acyclovir
