What is a Capsomer?
Individual units of a capsid (identical protein subunits that construct the capsid of a virus)
What is a Naked Virus?
a non-enveloped virus (viruses that consist only of a nucleocapsid)
What is a nucleocapsid?
term used to refer to the capsid and nucleid acid
What is a bacteriophage?
a virus that attacks bacteria
What is tropism?
the range of hosts that a virus can infect (term used to describe viruses that have an affinity to specific tissues)
What does cytopathic mean?
virus induced damage to the cell (the degenerative changes in cells associated with virus infection, alters microscopic appearance)
What is a persistent infection?
An infection that isn't cleared by the immune system (when a virus is harbored by a host cell, may last for a few weeks to several years)
What is a latent infection?
An infection where a virus is not actively producing new viral particles (when a virus is inactive for long periods of time)
What is an oncovirus?
a virus that causes cancer (A mammalian virus capable of initiating tumors)
What is induction?
transition of a bacteriophage from lysogenic to the lytic cycle

(A process in which the prophage in a lysogenic cell will be activated and progress directly into viral replication and the lytic cycle)
What does prion mean?
new kind of infectious particle
- prion diseases are transmitted by ingesting prion protein because prions do not have cell membranes, capsids, DNA or RNA
- e. g. Mad cow disease & kuru disease
What is a viroid?
an infectious agent that, unlike a virion, lacks a capsid and consists of a closed circular RNA molecule. all known viroids are plant pathogens
What is a plaque?
the clear zone of lysed cells in tissue culture or chick embryo membrane that corresponds to the area containing viruses
What is an acute infection?
an infection that is cleared by the immune system (infection that comes on quickly, with severe but short-lived effects)
