Candidiasis characteristics:
fungal UA tract disease; yeast- ovoid in shape, disease is often recurrent
organism of candidiasis:
candida albicans - found as part of the normal vaginal flora in 30%women and frequently is a source of disease (candidiasis) in the vaginal area.
frank vaginitis
or vulvovaginitis (because the vulva are also often infected is commonly called a yeast infection in women and presents with pruritis (itching), vaginal burning, and a white cheese like discharge
predisposition to vulvocandidiasis:
antibacterials, DM, pregnancy, tight fitting garments, oral contraceptives
males with candidiasis
tend to be less symptomatic, but they serve as a source for reinfection of women who receive tx, (ping-pong candidiasis) the women keep getting the disease.
some cases of candidiasis
but not all are STDs
incidence of vulvovaginitis
increases dramatically in women on broad range of ABT tx d/t elimination of normal flora of lactobacilli in vaginal tract and candida growth as the result

s/s of Trichomoniasis:
vaginitis in females and urethritis in males. burning on urination. females exhibit a white frothy d/c. s/s>severity in females
DX of trichomoniasis
by finding motile protozoans in wet mounts of clinical specimens
transmission of trichomoniasis
mainly by sexual contact
trichomonas vaginalis has a
lateral membrane that protrudes from one side. as it swims by means of flagella, the membrane waves, or undulates, back and forth. undulating membrane serves as a readily recognized ID marker
