About 25% of women carry these organisms vaginally. What are they?
Group B streptococci. They cause neonatal meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis(under 3 months of age). The organisms that must be covered by the antibiotics include E. coli/ Listeria monocytogenes as well as group B streptococcus. These are the 3 most common pathogens associated with meningitis in infants younger than 3 months of age.
What are the Viridans Group Streptococci?
This is a big heterogenous group of strep. that are not identified based on one Lancefield group. Viridens is the latin word for green, and most are alpha-hemolytic, producing greenish discoloration on blood agar. They are normal GI tract flora that are often found in the nasopharynx and gingival crevices. The viridans cause 3 main types of infections; Dental infections/endocarditis and abscesses.
Which specific strep species can bind to teeth and ferment sugar which produces acid and dental caries?
Strep. mutans.
What is a disease associated with Staph. aureus and results in subacute bacterial endocarditis?
It is caused by viridans streptococcus, while acute bacterial endocarditis. Strep pyogenes causes rheumatic fever, which damages the heart valves. Now, viridans streptococcus or the group D strep can more easily adhere to the heart valves and cause SBE.
Which of the Strep species can cause internal abscesses?
There is a subgroup of the viridans strep. called Streptococcus intermedius group(comprised of strep. intermedius/strep. constellatus/ and strep anginosus). These are also part of the GI flora. They are anaerobic and are found in abscesses in the brain and abdominal organs. They are found occasionally mixed with Bacteroides fragilis.
