Immunosurpressive Drugs
Cortisone, methotrexate, azathioprine, cyclosporin. Can have side effects and increase risk of infection and cancer.
Anti-inflammatory drugs
Aspirin, ibuprofin, naproxen, steroids.
Plasmapheresis
Removes cells and harmful molecules from blood circulation.
Palliative Care
What most treatments for autoimmine diseases are. Reduce severity of symptoms rather than disease. Goal is to improve quality of life, not cure.
Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia
Cause: Antibody mediated. Antibodys are made against Rh blood group antigens. Causes opsonization and phagocytosis of RBCs.
Symptoms: Hemolysis, anemia
Goodpastures Syndrome
Cause: Antibody mediated. Compliment and antibodies cause inflammation of proteins in kidney glomerulus and lung alveoli.
Symptoms: Nephritis, lung hemorrhages
Myasthenia Gravis
Cause: Antibody mediated. Antibodies attack Ach receptors preventing binding.
Symptoms: Muscle weakness, paralysis.
Graves Disease
Cause: Antibody mediated. Antibodys stimulate TSH receptors.
Symptom: Hyperthyroidism
Pernicious Anemia
Cause: Antibody mediated. Antibodys attack parietal cells, reducing/eliminaing intrinsic factor production. Therefore no V. B12 absorbtion.
Symptoms: B12 necessary for normal RBC development. Get abnormal RBCs and anemia.
Type 1 Diabetes
Cause: Tcell mediated. T cells kill lancreatic islet cells.
Symptoms: Impaired glucose management, vascular disease
Rheumetoid Arthritis
Cause: T cell mediated. Attack of antigens in joints.
Symptoms: Inflammation of joints and erosion of cartilage.
Contact Sensitivity (poison ivy)
Cause: T cell mediated. Attacks proteins in skin.
Symptoms: DTH reaction and rash.
Lupus
Cause: Immune complex disease. Type III hypersensitivity. Attacks DNA and nuclear proteins.
Symptoms: Nephritis, arthritis, vasculitis.
Serum Sickness
Cause: Immune complex disease. Caused by exposure to animal antiserum.
Symptoms: Systemic vasculitis, nephritis, arthritis
Arthus Reaction
Cause: Type of serum sickness. Immune Complex mediated. Type III hypersensitivity Reaction.
Symptoms: Cutaneous Vasculitis.
2 Diseases caused by overactive compliment system
Lack of compliment reg. proteins:Hereditary Angioneurotic Edema, and Paroxysomal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.
