What is leadership? What are formal and informal leaders?
Leadership is the exercise of influence by one member of a group over other members to help the group.

Formal-given authority
Informal- no authority, but still exerts considerable influence
Trait approach to leadership effectiveness
Shows what kind of people are effective leaders

Limitations: it is not clear what comes first, possessing trait or holding a leadership position.
Behavior approach to leadership effectiveness
Focuses on what leaders do

4 Types of leader behaviors in Path-Goal Theory
Directive: lets subordinates know what and how to perform tasks
Supportive: lets subordinates know that their leader cares about their well being and is looking out for them
Participative: enables subordinates to be involved in decisions that affect them
Achievement-oriented: pushes subordinates to do their best. Set goals, expect high performance, and express confidence.
Transformational Leadership
Leadership that inspires followers to trust the leader, perform behaviors that contribute to the achievement of organizational goals, and perform at high levels
What do transformational leaders do to influence their followers?
Are charismatic leaders- have a vision of how good things could be in contrast to how they are

Intellectually stimulate subordinates to become aware of problems and view them in a new perspective

Developmental consideration for followers and provides opportunities for them to develop and grow
Romance perspective of leadership
Perceptual biases can cause followers to attribute too much to leader's personal style and too little to situation
