Explain Hubs.
Hubs are multiport repeaters, combining connectivity with amplifying and re-timing. Typically have 4, 8, 12 and 24 ports allowing many devices to be easily connected. Simply require power and plugged in RJ-45's. Layer 1 devices.
Explain benefits/drawbacks of Shielded Twisted Pair cable for LAN Media
STP (4 pairs individually wrapped in foil and overall wrapped again) combines shielding, cancellation & twisting: Reduces electrical noise from inside & outside cable. Greater protection from all types interference; more expensive/difficult to install than UTP.
Describe a patch panel.
Patch panesl are convenient groupings of RJ-45 jacks. Come in 12, 24 and 48 ports, typically rack mounted. Front: RJ-45 jacks;
rear: punch-down blocks provide connectivity paths. Layer 1 devices.
Explain benefits and drawbacks of fiber optic cable.
Conducts light pulses at high data rates. Expensive. Not susceptible to EMI. Two fibers encased in separate sheaths.
Layer 1 Components generic characteristics:
Create or act on bits;
Do not recognize info pattern, addresses or data;
Simply move bits around;
Fundamental troubleshooting since problems often occur in RJ-45 terminatins, jacks, punch-downs, repeaters, hubs or transceivers.
Explain benefits and drawbacks of coaxial cable.
Hollow outer conductor surrounds single inner copper wire. Requires fewer repeater boosts. Less $ fiber optic. Large diamter = difficult/ expensive to install. Special care req'd to ensure ground.
Explain a transceiver.
A transceiver is both transmitter and receiver. Layer 1 device commonly converts AUI prots to RJ-45. Transmit from one pin config to another, often built into NIC, which are Layer 2, both called signaling components.
What specifications delineate requirements for Ethernet and Token Ring Systems and FDDI?
IEEE 802.3 and 802.5
Which networking media are recognized for the five categoies (CAT 1 Thru CAT 5)specified in TIA/EIA-568-A?
-STP;
-UTP;
-fiber-optic cable;
-coaxial cable.
Explain Unshielded twisted pair cable and it's benefits and drawbacks.
UTP is 4 pair wire. Each of the 8 22 or 24 guage wires is insulated. Pairs are twisted. Soley relies on cancellation of twisting to reduce signal degradation caused by EMI and RFI. Small diameter, easy to install, least expensive networking media.
What are the six elements of LAN cabling addressed by TIA/EIA - 568-A:
-horizontal cabling;
-telecommunications closets;
-backbone cabling;
-equipment rooms;
-work areas;
-entrance facilities.
Explain benefits and drawbacks of wireless networking.
Electromagnetic waves can travel thru atmosphere or vacuum at speed of light. Very versatile. IEEE 802.11 standards.
Explain Repeaters.
Repeaters regenerate and retime signals enabling cable to extend farther. Only deal with packets at bit level, therefore or Layer 1 devices.
