How is the atmosphere divided?
into layers according to temperature
What does air pressure do?
it pushes down at abou 14.5 psi
What are the layers in the atmosphere from lowest to highest?
Troposphere, stratosphere, mestsphere, thermosphere, exosphere
Where does most weather take place?
Troposphere
What is the troposphere?
lowest level of atmosphere, contains 75% of gases in atmosphere, high goes up so does temperature, most dense layer, constantly in motion, holds jetstream
What is the stratosphere?
second layer, temp remains failry constant (cold!) contains the ozone that absorbs UV radiation (causes the temp to increase in the upper part of the layer)
What is the mesosphere?
third layer up, after stratosphere, temp drops to -100oC, coldest region, protects from meteroids
What is the thermosphere?
Layer above the mesosphere, thin air temperature is very high in this layer, UV radiation is turned into heat
What is the exosphere?
Highest part of atmosphere, air very thin, sattelites are here, day HOT, night COLD, energy=heat
What is the magnetosphere?
Area that extends beyond the atmosphere, earth's magnetic field, made of protons and electrons, traps particles from the sun
What are the aurora borealis?
when large amounts of radiation is given off during a solar flare, the particles collide and cause the lights
What would happen if there were no atmosphere?
it would be COLDER because there is nothing to insulate
Why does the air seem thinner at high altitudes?
there is less atmosphere and so there is less pressure
How much pressure does the atmosphere push down with?
14 psi, about 1 ton a day
What is found in the atmosphere?
nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and trace gases (water vapor, CO2, ozone)
The pressure is at high temperatures.
lower
pressure is at lower temperatures?
higher
Why is it colder at higher altitudes?
less air (insulation) above
What is meterology?
the study of weather
What is weather?
condition of atmosphere at a particular time and place
What is climate?
Overall weather of an area over many years
What is meterology the study of?
temperature, air pressure, direction and speed of wind, humidity, kind and amount of precipitation, condition of the sky
What does a thermometer do?
measures temperature of air
