18 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back

Prophase 1

  • Chromosomes that are duplicated in interphase 1 remain sister chromatids
  • Homologous chromosomes join and form pairs
  • Membrane surrounding nucleus breaks apart

Metaphase 1

  • Homologous chromosome pairs align along the middle of the cell
  • Spindle fibers attach to each pair

Anaphase 1

  • Pairs of duplicated homologous chromosomes separate and are pulled toward opposite ends of the cell
  • Sister chromatids stay together

Telophase 1

  • Nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes
  • Cytoplasm divides forming 2 daughter cells
  • Sister chromatids stay together

Prophase 2

  • Chromosomes do not duplicate
  • Nuclear membrane breaks apart

Metaphase 2

Sister chromatids align along the middle of the cell

Anaphase 2

Sister chromatids of each duplicated chromosome are pulled apart and move to opposite sides of the cell

Telophase 2

  • Nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromatids which are again called chromosomes
  • Cytoplasm divides and 4 cells form
  • Each cell has half the number of chromosomes as the original cell

Haploid

sex cell

Diploid

body cells

fertilization

process where an egg cell and sperm cell join together

zygote

cell formed after fertilization

homologous

pairs of chromosomes that have genes for the same traits arranged in the same order

sister chromatid

separate to produce 4 haploid cells

meosis

the division of a reproductive cell & its nucleus that produces 2 pairs of identical haploid cells

offspring

  • produced after sexual reproduction
  • has a new combination of DNA

egg

female sex cell

sperm

male sex cell
