psychosis
a state in which a person is unable to comprehend reality and has difficulty communicating and relating to others
impulsivity
failure to resist an impulse or urge or to respond after a period of reflection related to low levels of serotonin (5 HT), hyperactivity of limbic system, inadequate control by the cortex.
aggression
Any verbal or nonverbal force meant to harm or abuse another person.
Hallucination
the occurrence of sight, sound, touch, smell, or taste without any external stimulus to the sensory organs.
Illusions
one or more of a person's five senses playing tricks on the person. sensory misperception of environmental stimuli
auditory hallucinations
moving eyes back and forth as if looking for someone, listening intently to a person who is not speaking, engaging in conversation with an invisible person, grinning or laughter that seems inappropriate, slowed verbal responses as if preoccupied.
visual hallucinations
suddenly appearing startled, frightened, or terrified by another person or object or by no apparent stimulus, suddenly running into another room.
olfactory hallucinations
wrinkling nose as if smelling something horrible, smelling parts of the body, smelling the air while walking toward another person, responding to an odor with terror
Gustatory hallucinations
spitting out food or beverage, refusing to eat, drink, or take medications
tactile hallucinations
slapping self as if putting out a fire, trying to brush invisible things, like bugs off the body
kinesthetic hallucinations
involve the feeling of body processes such as blood pulsing through the veins, food digesting, or urine forming. typically associated with organic changes such as those that occur in a stroke, brain tumor, seizures, substance dependence and substance withdrawl.
command hallucinations
type of auditory hallucination that is potentially dangerous.
Grandiosity (delusions of grandeur)
exaggerated sense of importance or self worth. "Ive been a member of the president's cabinet since the reagan years. no pres. can do without me. If it weren't for me, we would probably be in world war IV by now"
Erotomanic delusions
beliefs that a person, usually someone famous and of higher status is in love with the person. "Julia Robers is really my wife. we got married last week. she adores me and will be here soon to visit."
delusions of control
occur when the person believes that feelings, impulses, thoughts, or actons are not one;s own but are being imposed by some external force. "I have this wire in my head, and my family controls me with it. they make me wake up and make me go to sleep. they control everything i say, i cant do anything on my own."
somatic delusions
occur when people believe something abnormal and dangerous is happening to their bodies. "My esophagus is being torn apart. I have this rat in my stomach, and sometimes he comes all the way up to my throat. He's eating at my esohagus. Look in my throat now, you can probably see the rat."
Ideas of reference
remarks or actions by someone else that in no way refer to the person but that are interpreted as related to her or him. "People on tv last night told me i was in charge of saving the environment"
thought broadcasting
occurs when peple believe that others can hear their thoughts. "Im afraid to tink anything. I know you can read my mind and know exactly what im thinking. "
thought withdrawl
belief that others are able to remove thoughts from ones mind. "I cant tel you what im thinkg, someone just stole my thoughts."
thought insertion
belief that others are able to put thoughts into ones mind. "You think what im telling you is what im thinking, but it isnt. my father keeps putting all these thoughts in my head. they are not my thoughts"
religious delusions
false beliefs with religious or spiritual themes. "as long as i wear these 10 religious medals and keep all these pictures of jesus pinned to my clothes, nothing bad can happen to me. no one can hurt me as long as i do this"
delusions of persecutions
beliefs that someone is trying to harm the person. "the CIA/FBI are both out to get me. i am constantly being followed. One of the other patients in here is really a CIA agent and is here to spy on me."
intermittent explosive disorder(IED)
DSM-IV-TR diagnosis. the affected person has episodes of aggressive impulses that result in serious assaultive acts or destrucation of property.
