what is located in the subarachnoid space?
CSF circulates
major arteries and veins supplying the brain
what is a cistern?
an area created where arachnoid stretches over sulci
what are potential spaces in the meninges?
subdural space - between dura and arachnoid
epidural space - between dura and skull
where does bleeding occur if bridging veins are torn?
into subdural space
what artery and nerves supply meninges?
middle meningeal artery
sensation - trigeminal nerve
what is a dural sinus?
where 2 layers of dura are separated
what is the function of dural sinuses?
receive venous drainage from brain
drain into jugular vein
what do emissary and diploic veins drain?
emissary - scalp to dural sinuses
diploic - skull to dural sinuses
what happens if dural sinus is blocked by emolus or tumor?
usually asymptomatic b/c of many anastomoses
where is the choroid plexus located?
what makes up the choroid plexus?
located within ventricles
comprised of pia mater, coroid epithelial cells, capillary bed
what is the general flow of CSF?
lateral v -> interventricular foramen of Monro -> 3rd v. -> cerebral aqueduct -> 4th v. -> (spinal canal or) foramen of Magendie, foramina of Luschka -> subarachnoid space -> reabsorbed to veins via arachnoid granulations
what are functions of CSF?
protection, buoyancy, transport of metabolites, drugs, nutrients, hormones
what is communicating hydrocephalus?
overproduction or impaired resorption of CSF
obstruction in subarachnoid space
what is non-communicating hydrocephalus?
blockage of flow by occlusion of any connections
what do vertebral arteries supply?
brainstem and cerebellum
what supplies the hemispheres?
anterior, middle, posterior cerebral arteries
what do superficial veins drain into?
superior sagittal sinus and cavernous sinus
what do deep veins drain into?
great vein of galen
what is the location and cause of EPIDURAL hemorrhage?
location - between skull and dura (epidural space) or between dural layers
cause - middle meningeal artery, temporal bone fx
what is the location and cause of SUBDURAL hemorrhage?
location - potential space b/w dura and arachnoid
cause - torn bridging veins
what is the location and cause of SUBARACHNOID hemorrhage?
location - CSF compartment b/w arachnoid and pia
cause - major arteries and veins, aneurism or trauma
what is the location and cause of Parenchymal hemorrhage?
location - within nervous tissue
cause - penetrating arteries and veins
what is the location and cause of intraventricular hemorrhage?
location - within ventricles
cause - capillaries in choroid plexus and vessels in surroundsing nervous tissue
