Köhnken et al (1999)

A meta-analysis of 53 studies found that on avg, an increase of 34% in the amount of correct information generated in the CI compared with standard interviewing techniques.

However, most of these studies tested volunteer witnesses, usually students, in the lab.

Milne and Bull (2002)

Examined the relative effectiveness of each of the four components of the CI.

Undergrad students and children were interviewed using just one individual component, and compared to the control condition (where they were instructed to simply "try again").

Recall across each of the 4 individual components was broadly similar, and no different to that of the control group.

However, when ppts were interviewed using a combo of the REPORT EVERYTHING and MENTAL REINSTATEMENT components of the CI, their recall was significantly higher than in all other conditions.

Time problems with the CI and it is also difficult and expensive to train police in these techniques.

Kebbell and Wagstaff (1996)

Stein and Memon (2006)

CI used in Brazil . CI far more superior in producing forensically rich information.

The CI may pave the way for a new approach to interviewing witnesses in Brazil and other developing countries, thus reducing the incidence of miscarriages of justice.
