What are the 2 essential characteristics of a somatoform disorder?
1) physical symptoms for which there is no demonstrable base (strong presumption that they are linked to psychobiological factors)
2) symptoms not intentional or under the conscious control of the client
What is malingering?
Conscious production of symptoms to get some gain (e.g. drugs, disability income)
What is factitious disorder?
Conscious production of symptoms to assume the sick role
What is psychosomatic illness?
Evidence of a general medical condition that may be affected by stress or psychological factors (eg ulcers, hypertension)
