How do you prepare med. from an ampule?
note neckband which indicates preweakening for easy breakage
turn ampule upside down to move fluid into top turn top up and rotate to displace fluid to bottom when opening ampule don't squeeze the top too tightly when opening, place alcohol wipe over the neck of ampule and snap off the top by bending it toward you the ampule top should snap off easily if it seems unusually difficult to break, rotate the ampule slightly to use a different break point insert needle into ampule hold ampule with bottom slightly higher than top or tip ampule on its side or place on flat surface to withdraw med. |

no discomfort of skin puncture
relatively rapid systemic action |
What are the disadvantages of inhalation meds?

What would you do if a pt refuses and injectable med that has already been drawn up?
waste it while another nurse witnesses
document |
What is the proper Z track technique?
attach a clean needle to the syringe after the med is drawn up
pull the skin down or to one side about 1" and hold w/ nondominant hand insert the needle and aspirate to detect the presence of blood inject the med slowly, steadily withdraw the needle, and release the displaced tissue do not massage the site |
What should you do if blood is aspirated when performing an IM injection?
remove needle, obtain a new needle and syringe and dose and select a new site
How should you teach a pt to use a MDI?
shake the med
hold the MDI about 1 1/2 to 2" away from mouth while open breathe out normally press the MDI down once so it releases a spray of med into your mouth while you breathe in slowly continue breathing in as slowly and deeply as possible hold your breath for 10 seconds or as long as comfortable breathe out slowly |
What are the parts of a med. order?
pts name
date and time name of drug dosage route frequency signature |
How do you mix medications in one syringe?
first check compatiblility
always withdraw the multidose first if insulin regular is first |
When preparing meds. from an ampule and a vial which is prepared first?
vial
Before any insulin is given, the nurse must be aware of what?
