muscular dystrophy
Group of genetically transmitted disorders characterized by progressive weakness and muscle fiber degeneration without evidence of nerve involvement or degeneration of nerve tissue.
polymyositis
Chronic progressive disorder affecting the skeletal muscles. Characterized by weakness of bones and degeneration.
strains
Injury of the body of the muscle or attachment of the tendon resulting from overstretching, overextension or misuse.
ankylosing spondylitis
Type of arthritis that affects the vertebral column and causes deformities of the spine.
arthritis
inflammation of the joints.
bunion; hallux valgus
Abnormal enlargement of the joint at the base of the great toe.
dislocation
Displacement of a bone from its normal location within a joint, causing loss of function in the joint.
ganglion
Cystic tumor developing on a tendon; sometimes occurs on the back of the wrist.
gout
Form of acute arthritis that is characterized by inflammation of the first metatarsal joing of the great toe.
osteoarthritis
Known as degenerative joint disease. Most common arthritis that results from wear and tear on the joints especially weight-bearing joints such as hips and knees.
rheumatoid arthritis
Chronic, systemic, inflammatory diesase that affects multiple joints of the body-mainly the small peripheral joints, such as the hands and feet.
sprain
Injury involving the ligaments that surround and support a joint, caused by wrenching or twisting motion.
subluxation
The abnormal movement of one of the bones that comprise a joint. Not a true dislocation. A partial dislocation.
systemic lupus erythematosus
Chronic inflammatory connective disease affecting the skin, joints, nervous system, kidneys, lungs and other organs. Most striking symptom is a butterfly rash that appears on the face.
lyme disease
Acute, recurrent inflammatory infection, transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick.
