surgical asepsis(sterile technique)
to free an area or item from all microorganisms, including pathogens and other microorganisms. it should be used in all and any office surgical procedures.
disinfection
killing or rendering inert most but not all pathogenic microorganisms
sterilization
process, act, or technique for destroying microorganisms using heat, water, chemicals or gases.
any break in sterlie technique ..
can lead to infection that the body can't fight
medical asepsis
destroys microorganisms after they leave the body
prevents transmission of microbes from one person to another hands and wrists are washed for 1-2 minutes |
surgical asepsis
destroys microorganisms before they enter the body
prevents entry of microbes into the body during invasive procedures hands and forearms are washed for 5-10 minutes with a brush |
sanitation
maintenance of a healthful disease free environment
how do sanitization, disinfection and sterilization differ?
sanitation and disinfection are adequate for maintaining medical asepsis in the medical office, these practices are not sufficient to process instruments and equipment used during sterile procedures.
Sterilization is the complete elimination or destruction of all forms of microbial life including spores forms. |
ethylene oxide
gas used to sterilize surgical instruments and other supplies
steam under pressure
autoclave
CLIA
Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments
Why is the properly working autoclave more effective at sterilizing equipment compared to boiling water?
The autoclave can reach temperatures higher than the boiling water there can sterilize them more effectively.
how should you load the autoclave?
Load the autoclave loosely to allow steam to circulate place empty wrapped containers or bowls on their sides with the lids wrapped separately. If containers are upright in the autoclave, air will settle in the interior of the container and keep them from circulating to the inner surfaces. place all packs on their sides to allow for maximum steam circulation and penetration.
What is the temperature, pressure and time for items in the autoclave?
250°,30 minutes at 15 pounds of pressure
Why is it important to set the timer on the autoclave during a cycle only after the correct temperature has been reached?
Some microorganisms, such as spores, are killed only if exposed to high enough temperatures for specific amount of time. So you need to let the autoclave reach that high temperature and then set the timer to assure that everything is sterilized properly.

Forceps
Surgical instrument used to grasp handle, compress, pull or join tissues, equipment or supplies
grasping, clasping or holding |
Scissors
Sharp instrument composed of two opposing cutting blades held together by a central pin in which the blades pivot
Scalpels
Small pointed knife with a convex edge for surgical procedures
Hemostat
Surgical instrument with slender jaws used for grasping blood vessels
Needle holder
type of surgical forceps used to hold and pass sutures through tissue
Serration
Groove, either straight or criss cross, etched or cut in to the blade or tip of an instrument to improve its bite or clasp
Ratchet
Notched mechanism, usually at the handle end of an instrument, that clicks into position to maintain tension on the opposing blades or tips of the instrument
types of scissors
suture scissors
bandage scissors sharp-sharp scissors sharp-blunt scissors blunt-blunt scissors |
types of scalpels
Reusable steel scalpel- handle can hold different blades for surgical procedures
Straight or pointed blades- incision and drainage procedures Curved blades- excise tissue |
Towel clamps
towel clamps are used to maintain the integrity of the sterile field by holding the sterile drapes in place
Probes and directors
A probe shows the angle in depth of an operative area, and a director guides the knife or instrument once the procedure has begun
Retractors
Retractors hold open layers of tissue exposing the areas beneath
What are the most common instruments used in a medical office?
forceps, scissors and scalpels
What types of instruments are used to remove tissue during a biopsy?
punch biopsy
What should you do if you drop a surgical instrument accidentally?
Carefully inspected it for damage. damaged instruments can usually be repaired and should not be discarded unless repair is not fixable
What 6 items should be included on a sterilization record
Date and time of the sterilization cycle
General description of the load Exposure time and temperature Name or initials of the operator Results of sterilization indicator Expiration date of the load (usually after 30 days) |
