What are the 3 functions of the lymphatic system?

1) Act as drainage system to recapture proteins + fluid that have leaked out of blood stream

2) Absorb fats from small Intestine+transport them to blood stream

3) Work w/ immune system in fighting infections

What do the lymph nodes do during infections?

They get swollen and get filled up with lymphocytes and crap

What is lymph?

clear watery fluid that surrounds the cells and flows in the system of lymph vessels (analogous to blood in the circulatory system)

the lymphatic system works very closely/alongside what other system?

the circulatory system

What are Lymph Vessels?

vessels similar to veins in the circulatory system that possess one-way valves (like veins) and move lymph fluid to lymph nodes.

Where are lymph nodes located?

located all along the path of the lymph vessels

What are Lymphocytes?

Lymph cells produced in the lymph nodes

What do the lymph nodes do?

Filter the lymph fluid and trap substances from inflammatory and cancerous lesions.

DURING infection, they swell with increased numbers of lymphocytes and collected debris

What's the thymus gland?

A type of lymph organ that shrinks from birth to adulthood that helps the body with disease, ESPECIALLY in childhood (before immune system matures)

Where is the thymus gland located?

located in the upper mediastinum

All lymph vessels lead to the thoracic cavity to WHAT 2 large ducts?

1) Right lymphatic duct--drains the right side of head+chest

2) Thoracic duct--drains the lower body+left side of head

What is the spleen and what does it do?

Organ made of lymph tissue.

Destroys old RBCs, filters microorganisms+foreign material from blood;
activates lymphocytes
stores blood, especially RBCs and platelets.

The immune system is composed of what?

1) lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, spleen and thymus gland)

2) The products of lymphoid organs (lymphocytes, antibodies) and macrophages

What is Natural Immunity?

Present from birth and consists of phagocytes, macrophages and natural killer cells.

What is Acquired immunity?

The body develops powerful, specific immunity against invading antigens.

What is the difference between Active Immunity and Passive Immunity?

Active: getting a disease; Getting a vaccine; Transfer of immune cells from a donor.

Passive: Receiving an antibody serum (ex: tetnus) or injections; receiving maternal antibodies from placenta/breastmilk.

True or False: with AIDS infection, immune cells are destroyed in the process of the virus using those immune cells.

TRUE

True or False? You can die directly of AIDS.

FALSE: you die from some random illness/secondary infection caused by your immune system getting destroyed by AIDS

What is an allergy?

Allergy=an abnormal hypersensitivity acquired by exposure to an antigen.

What's a lymphoma?

malignant tumor of lymph nodes/lymph tissues

Multiple myeloma?

malignant tumor of bone marrow cells

thymoma?

malignant tumor of the thymus gland
