Entamoeba histolytica
Disease: Amoebiasis
Cause: ingest contam food/water; fecal-oral
Stage: Cysts
Diagnose: feces
Describe cysts/trophozites of E. histolytica
Cysts - Hard. Survive stomach acid
Troph - adults don't get sick (oval shape)
Symptoms of Amoebiasis
Diarrhea (mucous, sticky)
Abdominal pain (right lower quadrant)
Cholic (cramping comes and goes)
nausea
vomiting
If there's increased amt of amoeba what happens?
Compromised organs
e.g. liver infected --> hepatitis
Intestinal erosion = intestinal amoebiasis
Feeds off RBCs and bacteria
Trichomonas vaginalis
Infection = Trichomoniasis (STD)
Appearance: leaf like, flagella, nucleas, axostyle
Stage: adult. Trophozoite.
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis
Pruritis in genital area
Vaginal discharge
Males + females infected.
Treat both.
Giardia lamblia
Disease = Giardiasis
Stages: infected by Cyst (several nuclei)
Troph (heart shape, flagella, 2 nuclei)
Cause: fecal/oral, food/water
Found in: feces (both troph/cyst)
Locus in body: duodenum
Symptoms of Giardiasis
Diarrhea (watery, foul smell)
Flatulence, nausea, dehydration
Trypanosoma brucei
Disease = Trypanosomiasis
Where - localized o/side of RBCs
How? VECTOR = tsetse fly
Dx: Blood culture
Symptoms of Trypanosomiasis?
Headache, fever, anemia
Plasmodium SP
Disease: Malaria
Infection: by troph stage; VECTOR - female anopheles mosquito
Dx: Blood culture (Inside the RBCs)
Symptoms of Malaria
Anemia, spleen and liver damage, fever and chills, urine turns black (destroyed RBCs)
Toxoplasma gondii
Disease: Toxoplasmosis
Carrier = cat
Dangerous for PREGNANT WOMEN and IMMUNOCOMPROMISED
Sources: Food/water contam
Infected by oocytes
Symptoms of Toxoplasmosis
Fetus still birth, brain damage
general malaise, fatigue, muscle aches
