equivalent expressions

expressions that have the same value


coefficient

the numerical part of a variable (6x)


constant

the distributive property

Forms equivalent expressions:
combines addition and multiplication: 3(4 + 2) = 3 x 4 + 3 x 2. simplifies w/subtraction: 2(x  1) = 2x + 2[x + (1]= 2x + (2) = 2x  2 

simplest form

an algebraic expression with NO like terms and no parenthesis: 6x + 12
