ratio

A relationship between two quantities, normally expressed as the quotient of one divided by the other. For example, if a box contains six red marbles and four blue marbles, the ratio of red marbles to blue marbles is 6 to 4, also written 6:4. A ratio can also be expressed as a decimal or percentage.

proportion

A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal.

quadrants

Definition. A two-dimensional graph (Cartesian plane) includes negative and positive values of both x and y. This graph is divided into fourquadrants, or sections, based on those values. The first quadrant is the upper right-hand corner of the graph, the section where both x and y are positive.

rational numbers

A rational number is a number that can be written as a ratio. That means it can be written as a fraction, in which both the numerator (thenumber on top) and the denominator (the number on the bottom) are whole numbers. The number 8 is a rational number because it can be written as the fraction 8/1.

irrational numbers

In mathematics, an irrational number is any real number that cannot be expressed as a ratio of integers. Irrational numbers cannot be represented as terminating or repeating decimals.
