Substitution Property of Equality

A quantity may be substituted for its equal in any expression.

If a=b then a may be replaced by b in any expression.



(Ex. X=-3


3x-1 becomes 3(-3)+1)

Reflexive Property

Any quantity is equal to itself. For any number a, a=a.

(Ex. 7=7)

Symmetric Property

If one quantity equals a second quantity, then the second quantity equals the first quantity.

(Ex. 9=6+3


6+3=9)

Transitive Property

If a first quantity equals a second quantity and the second quantity equals a third quantity, the the first quantity equals the third quantity. For any numbers a b and c, if a=b, and b=c, then a=c.

Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, property of equality

When solving an equation, you sometimes will add/subtract/multiply/divide the same value to each side of the equation.
