2 main types of bone tissue |
Dense /compact bone and spongy /cancellous bone |
Dense / compact bone |
The heavy strong outer part of the bone. Composed of osteons arranged in concentric rings around a central ( haversian) canal that allows for the passage of nerve and blood vessels. There is very little space between the osteons. This makes the bone tissue solid and heavy to provide protection support and resistance to the stressors of weight and movement. Compact bone is exterior to spongy bone and makes up the majority of long bones as well as the exterior portion of all other bones. |
Spongy/Cancellous bone |
Does not have osteons but is composed of trabeculae arranged in widely spaced , irregular mesh work of small bony plates. This provides bones with flexibility, less weight for easier movement and supports and protects the spaces filled with red bone marrow. Spongy bone makes up most of the bone tissue of short flat and irregularly shaped bones as well as the epiphyses of long bones. |
