Systemic manipulation of the body's tissues

Massage

Physiological effects of massage:

Promotes local & systemic relaxation/invigoration, increases local blood flow, breaks down adhesions, and encourages venous return

Effects on the Injury Response Process:

Cardiovascular Effects, Neuromuscular Effects, Pain Control, and Psychological Benefits

Deep massage techniques: (cardiovascular effects)

Increases blood flow, increases histamine release, and increases temperature

Light massage techniques: (cardiovascular effects)

Activates SNS that causes temporary capillary vasodilation

Neuromuscular effects: (massage)

Increases muscle flexibility; increases muscular, fascial or capsular extensibility; effective in reducing amount of DOMS; increases venous & lymphatic flow

Reduced through interrupting muscle spasm & reducing edema (type of pain)

Mechanical pain

Diminished by increasing blood flow and by encouraging the removal of cellular wastes (type of pain)

Chemical pain

In massage, interaction reduces patient anxiety, depression & mental stress. (T/F)

True

Patient must be appropriately draped for modesty & the area to be treated must be exposed. (T/F)

True

Therapeutic massage is used for:

Painful conditions of musculoskeletal origin, muscle strains, muscle spasm, muscular/fascial adhesions, trigger point therapy

Edema reduction tx duration:

QD (once a day) for an average of 5-10 minutes

Friction massage tx duration:

QD (once a day) for 5 minutes or as needed

Indications: (massage)

To relieve fibrosis, increase venous return, reduction of lymphatic/venous edema, break pain-spasm-pain cycle, evoke systemic relaxation, improve/stimulate local blood flow, increase ROM

Contraindications: (massage)

Acute sprains/strains, areas of active inflammation, sites where fx failed to heal, skin conditions, open wounds, infection causing lymphagitis, phlebitis/thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, arteriosclerosis, cellulitis, abscess

Massage may decrease the inflammatory response when used in the acute or subacute stage of the injury response cycle. (T/F)

False - increase the inflammatory response

Use increased pressure when applying massage over areas having decreased pressure. (T/F)

False - use decreased pressure

Do not massage for swelling caused by cardiovascular insufficiency, kidney/liver dse, or pleural effusion. (T/F) for

True

Lubricants or any massage media can be used in friction massage. (T/F)

False
