The basic unit of life is called the ___________ |
Cell |
Living things can be singled celled (______________), or more complex (_____________________) |
Prokaryotic (single celled) Eukaryotic (Multicellular, more complex) |
Simple, small cells with no nucleus. These make up bacteria and other very small organisms. Outside is a cell wall, cell membrane, and capsule. Flagella sometimes help the cell move. Inside is called the cytoplasmic region and it contains nucleoid, cytoplasm, and ribosomes. |
Prokaryotic Cells (single celled organisms) |
More complex cells, bigger. Have a defined nucleus that holds the cell's DNA. Plants and animals are made up of these types of cells. |
Eukaryotic Cells |
The outer boundary of a cell; allows some substances in and keeps others out... |
Cell Membrane |
This organelle is where the cells gets its energy in the human body; where nutrients from food react with oxygen to make energy for the cell. |
Mitochondria (mitochondria are where cellular respiration takes place in the cell) |
These organelles are tiny factories that make different things the cell needs (like proteins, for example) |
Ribosomes |
The "brains" of the cell. Uses chromosomes to instruct the rest of the cell what to do next. Contains the DNA of the cell. |
Nucleus |
This fills the rest of the cell and is made mostly of water. Organelles float around in this substance.... |
Cytoplasm |
These organelles clean up the cell, getting rid of waste and other unwanted substances that may get into the cell.... |
Lysosomes |
Cells group together in organisms to make _________________. |
Tissues |
What is similar about cell membranes and cell walls?
Cell membranes and cell walls both enclose cells |
What is different about cell membranes and cell walls? |
Plant cells have both cell walls and cell membranes. Animals cells do not have cell walls (have only cell membranes). |
What is the difference in a cell membrane and a cell wall? |
A cell wall is the outer structure that helps plant cells keep their shape (provide structure and support). A cell membrane is semipermeable and controls movement of molecules in and out of the plant and animal cells. |
Where does photosynthesis take place in a plant cell? |
In the chloroplasts of plant cells (in the the green leaves) |
How are plant cells similar to animals cells? How are they different? |
Plant and animal cells contain many of the same components (nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, etc). Plant and animal cells are different in at least two ways: 1. Plant cells have a cell wall for support/animals cells do not have cell walls 2. Plant cells have cholorplasts, which animal cells do not. |
Unicellular organisms are called ______________. |
Prokaryotes (they have prokaryotic cells). These include bacteria, yeast, amoebas, etc. |
Multicellular organisms are called _____________. |
Eukaryotes (they have eukaryotic cells). These include all the multicellular organisms like humans, birds, insects, plants, etc. Cells in multicellular (eukaryotic) organisms are specialized to do different jobs. |
Cells that do the same job work together to form body ___________________. |
Tissues |
Groups of tissues form ________________. |
Organs |
Groups of organs work together to form _____________________________. |
Organ Systems |
Groups of organ systems working together form an _______________________. |
Organism |
