What is the source and role of GnRH?
HYPOTHALAMUS

stimulates the anterior pituitary to release FSH and LH
What is the source and role of LH?
ANTERIOR PITUITARY

acts upon Leydig cells to stimulate testosterone secretion
What is the source and role of FSH?
ANTERIOR PITUITARY

acts upon sertoli cells which support spermatogenesis and convery the testosterone from Leydig cells into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estrogens. Sertoli cells also produce androgen binding protein (ABP) which facilitates concentration of testosterone within the seminiferous tubules
What is the source and role of Testosterone?
Leydig cells (interstitial cells of the testes)

Crucial for spermatogenesis. Negative feedback on hypothalamus decreases GnRH secretion and thus FSH and LH secretion.
What is the source and role of Estrogen?
Sertoli cells (support spermatogenesis within the wall of the seminiferous tubules)

Negative feedback on hypothalamus decreases GnRH and thus FSH and LH secretion.
What is the source and role of Inhibin?
Sertoli cells

Negative feed-back on pituitary decreases FSH secretion
What is the function of the Mullerian Inhibitary horomone (MIH)?
critical for normal male differentiation

produced by sertoli cells

causes the paramesonephric (Mullerian) ducts to regress, leaving only the mesonephric ducts to grow and differentiate
What is the function of Dihyrotestosterone?
induces development of the penis and scrotum from the bipotential external genital primordia...

(in females, in the absence of testosterone or MIS, the mesonephric ducts atrophy, the paramesonephric ducts become the uterine tubes, horns and body, cervix, and cranial vagina, and the indifferent external genitalia become the vulva, clitoris, vestibule, and caudal vagina)
