Hypospadias
- congenital defect in which the urethra opens on the ventral (under) side of the penis rather than at the tip
Orchitis
- acute inflammation of testis, usually associated with mumps
Paraphimosis

- constriction impedes circulation, so gland swell
- if untreated may compromise arterial circulation
Peyronie's disease
- nontender, hard plaques on the surface of penis, associated with painful bending of penis during erection
Phimosis

- occurs in late childhood or early adolescence, rare after age 20
- faulty anchoring of testis on wall of scrotum allows testis to rotate medially
Varicocele
- dilated tortuous varicose veins in the spermatic cord
Vas deferens
- duct carrying sperm from the epididymis through the abdomen and then into the urethra
Corpora cavernosa
- the two cylindrical columns of erectile tissue of the penis located on the dorsal (upper) side
Corpora spongiosum
- cylindrical column of erectile tissue of the penis located on the ventral (under) side
Glans
- the area where the corpus spongiosum expands into a cone of erectile tissue at the distal end of the penis
Corona
- the shoulder where the glans joins the shaft
Cremaster muscle
- controls the size of the scrotum by responding to the temperature

- empties into the urethra
Hesitancy
- a sense of residual urine and straining during urination

- meatus edges are reddened, everted, and swollen
- purulent urethral discharge and dysuria
- urine is cloudy
- cause determined by culture
- 50% are caused by chlamydia
Urethral Stricture
- pinpoint, constricted opening at meatus or inside along urethra
- congenital or secondary to urethral injury
- gradual decrease in force and caliber of urine stream
- shaft feels indurated (hard) along ventral aspect at the site of stricture
Spermatic Cord Varicocele
- dull pain with constant pulling or dragging feeling or asymptomatic
- feels like a bag of worms
- usually on the left side
- early treatment important to prevent potential infertility when an adult
