Syphilitic Chancre
- small, red, round, oval, superficial ulcer with a yellowish serous discharge
- begins withing 2-4 weeks of infection, usually syphilis - can be lifted like a button between thumb and finger during palpation |
Condylomata acuminata
- soft, pointed, fleshy papules that occur on the genitalia and can be singular or in a cauliflower lie patch
- may be gray, pale yellow, or pink -occurs on shaft of penis, around anus or behind corona - are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) |
Cryptorchidism
- un-descended testes
- 3% to 4% at birth, one-half descend in 1st month -30% in premature infants - by 6 years if not descended cause spermatogenesis and infertility |
Cystitis
- inflammation of the urinary bladder
Epididymis
- structure composed of coiled ducts located over the superior and posterior surface of the testes, which stores sperm
Epispadias
- congenital defect in which urethra opens on the dorsal (upper) side of penis instead of at the tip
Scrotal Hernia
- weak spot in abdominal muscle wall (usually in area of inguinal canal or femoral canal) through which a loop of bowel may protrude
- swelling and possible pain with straining - fingers cannot get above mass - usually due to indirect inguinal hernia |
Herpes genitalis
- a sexually transmitted disease characterized by clusters of small painful vesicles, caused by a virus
Hydrocele
- cystic fluid in tunica vaginalis surrounding testis
- painless swelling - a mass does not transilluminate - able to get fingers above the mass (unlike hernia) - may occur following: epididumitis, trauma, hernia, tumor of testis, or spontaneously in newborns |
Hypospadias
- congenital defect in which the urethra opens on the ventral (under) side of the penis rather than at the tip
Orchitis
- acute inflammation of testis, usually associated with mumps
Paraphimosis
- foreskin is retracted and fixed behind glans penis
- constriction impedes circulation, so gland swell - if untreated may compromise arterial circulation |
Peyronie's disease
- nontender, hard plaques on the surface of penis, associated with painful bending of penis during erection
Phimosis
- foreskin is advanced and tightly fixed over the glans penis
- may be congenital or secondary to infection |
Prepuce
- (foreskin) the hood or flap of skin over the glans penis that often is surgically removed after birth by circumcision
Priapism
- prolonged, painful erection of penis without sexual desire
rare condition that occurs with: -sickle-cell trait or disease - leukemia - malignancy - local trauma - spinal cord injuries |
Spermatic cord
- collection of vas deferens, blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves that ascends along the testis and through the inguinal canal into the abdomen
Spermatocele
- retention cyst in epididymis filled with milky fluid that contains sperm
Testicular Torsion
- sudden twisting of spermatic cord; surgical emergency
-excruciating pain in testicles of sudden onset - often during sleep or following trauma - may also have abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting w/o fever - red, swollen scrotum, one testis (usually left) shortened and higher - cords feel thick, swollen, tender, cremasteric reflex is absent on side of torsion - occurs in late childhood or early adolescence, rare after age 20 - faulty anchoring of testis on wall of scrotum allows testis to rotate medially |
Varicocele
- dilated tortuous varicose veins in the spermatic cord
Vas deferens
- duct carrying sperm from the epididymis through the abdomen and then into the urethra
Corpora cavernosa
- the two cylindrical columns of erectile tissue of the penis located on the dorsal (upper) side
Corpora spongiosum
- cylindrical column of erectile tissue of the penis located on the ventral (under) side
Glans
- the area where the corpus spongiosum expands into a cone of erectile tissue at the distal end of the penis
Corona
- the shoulder where the glans joins the shaft
Cremaster muscle
- controls the size of the scrotum by responding to the temperature
Ejaculatory duct
- empties into the urethra
Hesitancy
- a sense of residual urine and straining during urination
Hematuria
- bloody urine
Carcinoma of penis
- red. raised warty growth or ulcer, with watery discharge, may slough and is painless
- usually on glans or inner lip of foreskin and following chronic inflammation |
Urethritis
- infection of urethra causes painfull burning urination
- meatus edges are reddened, everted, and swollen - purulent urethral discharge and dysuria - urine is cloudy - cause determined by culture - 50% are caused by chlamydia |
Urethral Stricture
- pinpoint, constricted opening at meatus or inside along urethra
- congenital or secondary to urethral injury - gradual decrease in force and caliber of urine stream - shaft feels indurated (hard) along ventral aspect at the site of stricture |
Spermatic Cord Varicocele
- dull pain with constant pulling or dragging feeling or asymptomatic
- feels like a bag of worms - usually on the left side - early treatment important to prevent potential infertility when an adult |
