Solinoid

A coil of many circular turns of wire wrapped in the shape of a cylinder is called a solinoid.

Coiled wire turns around a cylinder.

Electromagnet

An electromagnet consists of a core of soft iron wrapped around with a coil of insulated copper wire.

Fleming's left hand rule

The rule states that the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the left hand are stretched out such that they are mutually perpendicular. The first finger points in the magnetic field and the second points the direction of current and the thumb will point the direction of motion/ force acting on conductor.

It is found that whenever a current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, a force acts on the conductor in a direction perpendicular to both the directions of the current and the magnetic field.
