Class

Electrolyte. Antidysrhythmic

Mech

Increases magnesium levels correcting for hypomagnesemia associated with cardiac dysrhythmias. Interferes with neuromuscular transmission which reduces muscle contractions during seizures. Smooth muscle relaxer and vasodilator.

Indications

Torsades


Cardiac arrest from torsades or if hypomagnesemia is suspected


Preeclampsia or eclampsia


Refractory to bronchoconstriction.

Prrcautions

Calcium chloride is antidote if respiratory depression ensues. Caution in renal failure patients

Side effects

Hypotension; respiratory depression; flushing or loss of tendon reflexes

Interactions

May block effects of digitalis

Dosage

Cardiac arrest. 1-2 g IV push


Torsades with pulse. 1-2 g IV over 5-60 mins


Preeclampsia and eclampsia 2-4 g IV over 5-60 min


Bronchoconstriction: 2 g IV over 5-60 mins
